PALO ALTO, Calif. -
The 53rd-ranked Long Beach State women's tennis team attempted to pull a second upset in as many days but ultimately came up short, falling to No. 11 Stanford 4-0 Saturday at the Taube Tennis Stadium in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The 49ers didn't go down easily, putting up a gallant fight in doubles before the Cardinal ultimately gained the first point of the match. Maeva Razakasoa and Hayley Thompson fell at the No. 2 spot to 50th-ranked duo Taylor Davidson and Ellen Tsay 8-5 while Holly Reid and Karolina Rozenberg pushed Caroline Doyle and Amelia Herring into a tiebreaker before falling 8-7 (5).
In singles play, LBSU had a tougher time taking games from Stanford as all six players held national rankings. Hayley Thompson fell 6-0, 6-1 to No. 54 Ellen Tsay while Julie Gerard went down 6-1, 6-1 to No. 21 Carol Zhao. The match was then decided as Holly Reid fell 6-2, 6-1 to No. 57 Carolina Doyle.
The loss ends Beach Tennis' season with a 21-3 record, tied for second best in school history. The 49ers current winning streak of 12 matches was also snapped, leaving it as the fifth longest in LBSU history. This year's roster included no seniors, making the road ahead bright for head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello's squad.
