Women's Water Polo Holds Off No. 19 Hartwick For 10-8 Win

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 12 Long Beach State women's water polo team withstood a few rallies from No. 19 Hartwick to pull away with a 10-8 victory. Christina Kotsia scored three goals, including two in the third, to lead the Beach (16-8).
LBSU's final nonconference match went off to a solid start as it built a 5-1 lead on visiting Hartwick (15-10). After an initial goal from the Hawks, LBSU scored all five first quarter goals in a five and a half minute span.
Justine Morgan evened things up with 5:34 to go in the first. Three minutes later, Coriann Snyder scored her first goal and Emily Matheson scored on the Beach's next trip down for a 3-1 lead. Chelsea Parks and Kotsia both scored in the final minute of the quarter to build the 5-1 lead.
The tides turned in the second as Hartwick outscored the Beach 3-1 to close the gap to just two goals at halftime. Sami Capparelli scored all three goals to lead the charge.
In the third, Kotsia scored twice more and Morgan scored again to give LBSU a commanding 9-5 lead heading into the final period. The flip-flop continued in the fourth as Hartwick again went on a run. Capparelli scored her fourth goal of the match but Snyder scored her second goal and helped keep Long Beach State out in front as the clock ticked down to zero.
Long Beach State will devote itself entirely to Big West play over the next few weeks. The 49ers host UC Davis on Sunday, Apr. 6 for a noon match.
