No. 8 Long Beach State Dominates No. 25 CSUN In 22-6 Win

Freshman goalkeeper Polina Synytsia made 15 saves, three steals and one assist while senior Lucy Miszewski added a career-high seven goals.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – No. 8 Women's Water Polo held strong defensively to keep No. 25 CSUN scoreless for the first 22 minutes of play behind an incredible performance by freshman goalkeeper Polina Synytsia, who had 15 saves in three quarters played, as the Beach cruised to a 22-6 win on the road against the Matadors.
Senior Lucy Miszewski scored a career-high seven goals to lead the Beach. Elisa Portillo added six goals and three assists in the win, breaking another school record set by Cassie Azevedo in 2009, surpassing 134 career assists.
In their final road game of the season, Long Beach State (14-10, 5-1 Big West) opened a quick 2-0 lead over CSUN (17-7, 2-3 Big West) in 40 seconds after Elisa Portillo and Chiara Amoroso added their first of the day. Polina Synytsia secured the Beach on defense, adding six saves and two steals across the first period, while Amoroso, Portillo, and Lucy Miszewski scored for LBSU to extend the lead to 5-0 after the first period.
The Beach continued the strong defense to create multiple attempts and extend the lead after shutting down the Matadors for another eight minutes, leading 10-0 at half after a pair of goals from Miszewski, and one each from Portillo, Daniela Quinzada, and Jermonie Billingsly.
Staying strong on defense and continuing to power on offense, the Beach extended the lead with another six unanswered goals before CSUN got their first goal of the game with two minutes left in the third period. Gaby Patenaude got one past the Matadors as LBSU led 17-1. Two late goals by the Matadors closed the third period, 17-3.
CSUN kept the momentum from the end of the third to cut the margin to 17-4 early in the last quarter of play. Billingsly's back-to-back goals and Patenaude's second of the day extended the lead to 20-4. Both teams traded goals as the Beach secured another conference win, 22-6 over the Matadors.
Miszewski added a career-high seven goals while Portillo added six and a team-high three assists to break another school record, while Polina Synytsia added 15 saves to go along with three steals and one assist.
The Beach will conclude the regular season at home hosting No. 9 UC Irvine on Thursday at 7 p.m. for conference play, followed by an exhibition match against No. 7 LMU on Friday afternoon. Both games will have live stats through TheFOSH.net.
