Men's Water Polo Falls To Stanford In MPSF Conference Match

Palo Alto, Calif.- No. 5 LBSU Men's Water Polo started its NorCal trip with a MPSF conference loss against No.1 Stanford.
In the first quarter of the game, juniors Zacchary Kappos and Nolan McConnell got the ball rolling for Long Beach State. Kappos scored from the perimeter and on a 6 versus 5 power play. McConnell also took advantage of being on man up offense and executed a goal on a 6 verses 5 power play. The Cardinals answer back and ended the quarter in their favor at a score of 6-3.
LBSU stepped up in the second quarter. Captain Devin Mefford lead the quarter with 2 goals, one from the center position and the other on a power play. Dimitrios Lappas used his speed a scored on a counter attack. Then after another power play opportunity, senior Nick Rascon scored a goal for the Beach and tied the quarter at 7-7.
In the third quarter, the Cardinal scored 3 more goals against LBSU. Kappos tried to take the lead and scored his third goal of the game on another power play opportunity and ended the quarter 10-8.
In the fourth and final quarter, LBSU took a stand and scored 4 more goals. Kappos scored his fourth goal from a 5 meter penalty shot. Rascon took a shot from the perimeter. McConnell scored on his second powerplay opportunity and Lappas scored on his second counter attack. Stanford rose up and scored 4 more goals as well and ended the game with a win in their favor 14-12. This is the first MPSF conference match loss for the 49ers.
Beach will play again tomorrow at 12 p.m. in another MPSF Conference Match against No. 4 Cal.
