IRVINE, Calif. - Redshirt freshman Maeva Razakasoa has earned the season's first Big West Player of the Week award as announced by the conference office today.
Razakasoa has been on fire early on, going undefeated in both singles and doubles since LBSU began competition Jan. 10. The 49er newcomer began her impressive campaign at the 3rd annual LBSU Winter Invitational Jan. 10 - 12 where she defeated opponents in singles and doubles from No. 62 Denver, Cal State Northridge and Portland.
She then went 4-0 last weekend when the 49ers traveled to Honolulu for a pair of matches. On Sunday, she played a part in earning both of LBSU's points against No. 45 Washington as she and doubles partner Ebba Unden defeated duo Elianne Douglas-Miron and Riko Shimizu before going on to beat Grace Ysidora 6-7 (4), 6-2, 10-5 in singles. Then on Monday, she and Unden won 8-5 over Xenia Suworowa and Cindy Nguyen of Hawai'i which Razakasoa proceeded to followed up with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Nguyen in singles.
The award marks the first for Razakasoa in her early career. She is the first freshmen to earn a player of the week nod for LBSU since Jaklin Alawi was awarded twice during her first season in 2010.
