LONG BEACH - Sophomore Ebba Unden and junior Karolina Rozenberg will compete in the 2013 Rivera/ITA Women's All American Championships this weekend at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the campus of UCLA.
The pair, ranked No. 59 nationally, enter the pre-qualifying round as the No. 6 seed. They will play Ana Vladutu and Jasmin King of Depaul University at 8:30 am Saturday morning. The pair will need to win three matches in order to advance to the qualifying round.
"Ebba and Karolina had an impressive doubles season together last year and earned this opportunity to play in the first collegiate major of the 2013-14 season," Long Beach State head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. "This is a great opportunity for them to play against some of the best teams in the country."
Unden and Rozenberg put together an impressive 22-5 record together during the 2012-13 season, including ending the season on a six-match winning streak. The pair also remained undefeated in conference play, earning them both Big West All-Conference honors.
Unden, named the 2013 Big West freshman of the year, also received an invite to compete in the pre-qualifying singles draw at the Championships. The Stockholm, Sweden native moved up in to the No. 1 spot mid-way through the 2013 spring season and hit her stride as she went 8-4 after the switch.
Last weekend, Unden went 2-1, defeating opponents from New Mexico State and North Texas before falling in the flight No. 1 finals to No. 41 Lucia Batta of UNLV.
"Coming off a good weekend at the UNLV tournament, Ebba is very excited to compete at the Championships," Hilt-Costello said. "She is a strong, determined player who is capable of competing with anyone. The coaching staff and her teammates are very excited to watch her play this weekend and the rest of the season."
Unden will also need to win three matches in order to advance to the qualifying round. She'll start by facing No. 5 seeded Mai El Kamash of Ole Miss at 11:30 am on Saturday. If she wins, she will compete again at 2:30 pm against the winner of the match between Abby Stevens (Wichita St.) and Klata Supejova (Eastern Michigan). Unden will also need to win three matches in order to advance to the qualifying round of the tournament.
The entire 49er squad will be back in action next weekend as they play host to the Beach Tennis Fall Invitational Oct. 4-6 at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
