Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State pushed two matches to super-tiebreakers, but the 49ers were held without a win in a 7-0 loss to No. 38 Purdue on Thursday. Sarah Cantlay and Anais Dallara both went three sets in singles.
Long Beach State's day started with dropping two close matches to lose the doubles point. Cantlay and Julie Luzar were defeated 8-4 at No. 3 doubles, but Dallara and Klaudia Malenovska lost by two games 8-6 to Imogen Golder and Gisella Pere, and No. 1 doubles also came down to two games, with Rachel Manasse and Laura Bernard being defeated by Jennifer Rabot and Mara Schmidt 9-7.
In singles, the Boilermakers early momentum carried through the early matches. Lynda Xepoleas defeated Manasse 6-4, 6-1 in the first match off the court, followed by a 6-4, 6-2 loss by Malenovska at the hands of Daniela Vidal. The match was then clinched when Golder topped Luzar at No. 6 singles 6-3, 6-2.
Dallara was the only 49er to win her first set, but dropped the second and fell too far behind in the super-tiebreaker despite a furious rally, falling 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 to Rabot in the top flight, while Schmidt defeated Bernard 6-2, 6-3. The final match of the day was at No. 5, where Cantlay rebounded with a tiebreaker win in the second set, but that momentum didn't last in the super-tiebreaker in a 6-3, 6-7, 10-5 defeat.
Long Beach State returns to the Rhodes Tennis Center next week for two matches, hosting Nebraska and Dartmouth.
