Long Beach, Calif. - The 49ers got a spark as Rachel Manasse and Laura Bernard defeated #26 Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein 8-5 to cap a doubles point victory, but came one singles match short of handing the No. 25 Huskers their second loss of the season 4-3.

Long Beach State capitalized early to take the doubles point. Playing without Klaudia Malenovska, Anais Dallara and Karolina Rozenberg got the 49ers started with an 8-1 defeat of Jennifer Holmberg and Janine Weinreich 8-1, and then Manasse and Bernard won their biggest match of the season, defeating No. 26 Geibert and Weinstein, their second win over a ranked pair this season. Patricia Veresova and Mary Weatherholdt won the final match at No. 2 over Sarah Cantlay and Julie Luzar, 8-2.

In singles, the 49ers came close but couldn't quite pull off the upset. Nebraska's two nationally ranked players each won, as #58 Mary Weatherholt defeated Dallara 6-0, 6-1, while #101 Janine Weinreich beat Rozenberg 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Cantlay kept the 49ers even with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Geibert, but Veresova defeated Manasse 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 and Weinstein won 6-2, 6-3 over Bernard, sealing the win for the Huskers. Long Beach State picked up the final singles win of the day, as Luzar held off Izabella Zgierska 7-5, 1-6, 10-5.

After Tuesday's action, Long Beach State moves to 10-5 on the year while Nebraska improves to 15-1. The 49ers will host Dartmouth on Thursday before returning to Big West in two weeks.
