Long Beach, Calif. - The No. 20 women's water polo team will play four matches this weekend as part of the UC Irvine Invitational. The 49ers begin play on Saturday, February 25 at 9 a.m. when they face the No. 2 USC Trojans.
Long Beach State is looking to make a move back up the rankings after a 2-4 start, and will have a nice opportunity at the UC Irvine Invitational, which features the Top 10 teams in the country and 16 out of the top 20. The 49ers will play two matches on Saturday and then two more on Sunday. The 15-seeded 49ers will start out the tournament against the second-seeded Trojan. The team will then be matched up against either the winner or the loser of No. 7 UC Irvine and No. 10 Loyola Marymount.
Three of the 49ers losses have come by just a single goal in 2012, and Long Beach State has outscored its opponents this season despite being under .500. Junior Melissa Matheson leads the team in scoring with 14 goals in six games.
The 49ers will spend two more weeks on the road after this weekend before returning to the Campus Pool on March 15, when they will host Bucknell at 7 p.m.
