LONG BEACH STATE TO HOST ALUMNI GAME: The 49ers will bring back former LBSU players to compete in the Alumni Game. It is a chance for the current team to honor the legacy left by former 49ers. The game will be played this Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Campus Pool.
49ERS SPLIT FOUR GAMES IN NORCAL TOURNAMENT: Long Beach State entered the NorCal Tournament in Stockton, California with a perfect 7-0 record. The first loss of the season came at the hands of MPSF rival UC Irvine 8-7. The team then lost a stunner to West Valley Junior College in an exhibition play 11-7. LBSU recovered to win two games the following day, a 11-8 over St. Francis and a 16-9 decision against Air Force.
ALEKSANDAR PETROVIC NAMED 49ER ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: The lone senior on the men's water polo team was named 49er Athlete of the Week for his play from Sept. 5- 12. He totaled 12 goals in the team's five victories at the Redlands Tournament this past weekend.
49ERS COMPLETE REDLANDS TOURNAMENT 5-0: Long Beach State swept all five of its contest at this past weekends tournament in La Verne, Calif. Aleksandar Petrovic and Brian Schiefer led LBSU in scoring, combining for 25 goals over the course of the weekend.
LONG BEACH STATE OFFENSE LEADS WAY TO VICTORIES: The 49ers' scoring has been timely and numerous, as it has already racked up 109 goals during the first seven games. LBSU boasts 15.6 goals per game while the defense has been strong limiting opponents to only five goals.
LONG BEACH STATE FRESHMAN CONTRIBUTE EARLY: The true freshman trio of Milos Vrzic, Hayden Leach, and Joey Fabian have had strong showings in the two tournaments the team has competed in. Vrzic is tied for second on the team with 12 goals on the season, and Leach and Fabian have combined for 10 goals in the trio's 15 combined games. Returning only one senior, Aleksandar Petrovic, the 49ers will need contributions from its young talent on the team. Redshirt freshman Beau Blacksten and Devin Mefford have also given valuable play for Long Beach State, netting 12 combined goals in 14 total games.
TEAM REACHES 7-0 FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2005: The 49ers have already matched the 2010 season win total of seven in just as many contests this season. The team has not been undefeated this late in the season since a 9-0 start during the 2005 campaign. This total will be put on the line against MPSF conference opponent UC Irvine this Saturday at 8:20 am.
PETROVIC ON PACE TO BREAK LAST YEAR'S GOAL TOTAL: The Serbian native has amassed 22 goals in the first seven contests this season. The senior has been filling the scoring load with the absence of Nick Rascon. Petrovic totaled 30 goals in 22 games last season.
49ERS SCORED 22 AGAINST LA VERNE: Long Beach State scored 22 goals in a decisive 22-5 victory over La Verne at the Redlands Tournament on Sept. 11. This ties for fifth all-time for the program. The record of 24 goals has happened twice, most recently in the 1998 season.
RASCON RETURNS FROM USA JUNIOR NATIONAL TEAM: Sophomore Nick Rascon completed his tour with the Junior National Team and made his season debut at the Redlands Tournament scoring two goals in his first game back with the 49ers. The Junior National Team finished the 2011 FINA Junior World Championships in ninth place, with a 4-3 record. Rascon scored eight of the teams 82 total goals during the tournament.
49ERS WIN FIRST TWO CONTESTS OF 2011 SEASON: At the UC Irvine Invitational, Long Beach State captured its first two victories of the young season defeating Fresno Pacific, 16-5, and Red- lands, 16-7. Senior Aleksandar Petrovic led the team with eight goals on the season, and freshman Milos Vrzic scoring 6 goals, filling the scoring load with the absence of All-MPSF Honorable Mention Nick Rascon who was competing with the USA Junior National Team.
