EUGENE, Ore. - On the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, senior Colin Dunbar qualified for the NCAA Championships in the men's discus Saturday evening at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
Dunbar notched a lifetime-best 180-01 on his first attempt, which was good enough to put him in the finals of the preliminaries. Dunbar's mark stood strong through the next round as he finished 10th overall to advance to the national meet.
The Santa Barbara, Calif., native also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the hammer throw on Friday. Dunbar will be the first 49er to compete in more than one event at the national championships since Brent Gray ran the 100m and 200m in 2008. He is also the first LBSU field athlete to be a multi-event qualifier since John Temidara (triple jump and high jump) in 2006.
Senior Cesar Puga fouled on all three attempts in Flight 3 of the discus.
Junior Katrina Graves-Johnson nearly made the cut in the women's high jump, clearing 5-07 to finish in a tie for 14th.
Overall, Long Beach State will send three athletes to the NCAA Championships, which will be held June 8-11 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. Nicholas Armstrong (decathlon), Colin Dunbar (hammer and discus), and Randi Hicks (javelin) will continue their season in two weeks.
