EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Randi Hicks punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships in the women's javelin on the first day of the West Preliminary Rounds at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. The top 12 finishers in each event advance to the national championships.
On Hicks' first attempt of the day, she threw for a distance of 162-03, which was good enough to put her 11th overall. Hicks, who garnered All-America honors last year, will be making her second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (June 8-11).
Senior Tara Ross advanced to the finals of the preliminary round but will not move on to the national meet as she finished 16th (153-05).
Junior Ben Woodruff also placed among the top 16 to qualify for the men's javelin finals where he got an additional three attempts, but he was unable to improve his mark of 216-10 as he finished 16th overall.
Junior Tyler Wallace was also a near qualifier, tying for 16th in the pole vault (16-10.75). Wallace was the Big West champion two weekends ago when he cleared a lifetime-best 18-00.50.
Other 49ers who competed in the regional meet on Thursday but were unable to advance in their respective events were Cesar Puga (Shot Put), Manny Neizer (Long Jump), Christopher Lawson (400m hurdles) and Phylicia Johnson (Long Jump).
Long Beach State returns to action at Hayward Field tomorrow with Koree Hines and Nimrod Piggee competing in the first round of the 110m hurdles (3:25 p.m.) and Colin Dunbar and Rajan Bains competing in the hammer throw (3:30 p.m.).
