
Long Beach State has successful start to Steve Scott Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. - The Long Beach State track and field team started off the 17th annual Asics Steve Scott Invitational on a high note with two individual victories Saturday at Anteater Stadium.
Ben Woodruff won the men's javelin with a lifetime-best 221-01, which ranks him third in school history behind All-Americans Doug Lefler and Chris Richardson. His mark is also the best in the Big West this season.
Heath Reedy added an individual victory in the 5000-meter run, clocking in at 14:40.26, while Josh Ruff took seventh (15:15.37) and Naveed Kharrat placed ninth (15:21.74).
Eric Nowell finished third overall in the long jump with a season-best 23-08.25.
Rajan Bains was fifth in the hammer with a lifetime-best 187-06. Austin Elmore also had a personal-record 183-07 to finish seventh.
In the 3000m steeplechase, Chris Walden had a top 10 finish, placing sixth at 9:25.08. Andrew Garcia added an eighth-place performance (9:36.92).
On the women's side, Nina Moore was Long Beach State's top finisher in the 5000m as she took third with a time of 17:28.15. Michelle Thompson also placed 10th overall with a season-best 17:54.73.
Phylicia Johnson was seventh in the long jump with a leap of 18-10.75 and Iesha Iwobi just missed out on a conference qualifying mark in only her second time competing in the long jump this season at 17-10.25.
Long Beach State closes out action at the Steve Scott Invitational on Sunday, May 1. Both the field and track events are set to begin at noon.
