Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State faces two more ranked foes this weekend as the 49ers travel to San Diego to face No. 17 UC San Diego followed by No. 10 San Diego State. The 49ers will first play the Tritons on Friday, Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. with a quick turnaround, playing the Aztecs on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Long Beach State played UC San Diego three times over the course of the 2010 season, and won two out of the three matches, though all three were very competitive. The 49ers win a 9-7 victory in overtime in the first meeting behind a hat trick from Krizia Cerda. Cerda netted three once again in the second meeting, a 9-6 win for LBSU. In the third and final tilt between the teams, four goals from Cerda was not quite enough as the 49ers fell just short by a 10-9 margin.
In 2010, the 49ers played San Diego State just once, falling 8-5. Lauren Sieprath led the 49ers in that game with two goals.
The 49ers are coming off of their first match of the season, an 11-4 defeat at No. 4 UCLA, but Long Beach State got 12 saves from senior Kristen Stragier as well as goals from Sieprath, Cerda, Julie Lantz and freshman Julia Garyfallou.
"A team like UCLA is going to expose any weakness that you have, but I was happy with the way that we competed throughout the match," said head coach Gavin Arroyo.
Long Beach State returns to UCSD for the Triton Invitational next weekend, and then hosts USC in the team's home opener on Feb. 18 at Noon.
