NEXT UP
The 49ers get set to wrap up their 2010 tournament schedule this weekend with four games at the SoCal Tournament - hosted by UCLA. The Beach will play Pepperdine in its opening game at 9:20 a.m. on Saturday at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. With a win over the Waves, Long Beach State will face the winner of the USC vs. Redlands match-up at 2:40 p.m. If the 49ers lose their opener they will face the loser of the USC vs. Redlands game at 1:20 p.m. Sunday's match-ups and game times will determined after Saturday's results are final.
LAST WEEK
The Beach lost a non-conference, 12-7, decision to UC Irvine, Friday at Anteater Pool. Freshman Nick Rascon and junior Alexsandr Petrovic led the 49ers with two goals each. Senior Patrick van der Linde, junior Taylor Clute and sophomore Barry Snyder each chipped in with a goal apiece. On Saturday, the 49ers hosted the annual Alumni game at 49er Pool. The great turnout of LBSU legends that came back to play included Justin Koeppen (`10), Steve Snyder (`71), Stefan Ludecke (`06), Kevin vanHaaster (`08), Nick Korsgaden (`08), Ash Blythen (`09), Clint Wilson (`08), Eric Benson (`09), Pavle Filipovic (`10), Darin Blizzard (`89) and a number of other former 49er greats.
AT THE SOCAL
Under head coach Gavin Arroyo the 49ers are 5-7 at the SoCal Tournament. In 2008 Long Beach State finished 2-2, with wins over Bucknell and Princeton. The Beach went 2-2 in 2007 as well, with wins over St. Francis (NY) and UC Irvine. In 2006 - Arroyo's first year - the 49ers finished 1-3, with their victory coming over Air Force.
THE BEACH vs. ...
PEPPERDINE - Long Beach State is 30-65 all-time vs. Pepperdine, with its last victory coming in a 15-11 win at the NorCal Tournament in 2008. Under Arroyo, the 49ers have only faced the Waves in the SoCal Tournament once, in a narrow 8-7 loss in 2007.
USC - After losing a non-conference game at USC earlier in the year, LBSU is 22-61 all-time against the Trojans. If the 49ers face-off against USC this weekend, it will be the first meeting between the two squads in the SoCal Tournament since Arroyo has taken over.
REDLANDS - The Beach holds an impressive 6-0 all-time record against University of Redlands, with its last win coming in 2008 at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. In that game the 49ers topped the Bulldogs 16-7. In 2007, Long Beach State beat Redlands 12-8 at the Inland Empire Classic.
A CLOSER LOOK AT ...
PEPPERDINE - The Waves enter the SoCal Tournament with a 6-5 record in 2010. After opening the year with a 5-1 record, Pepperdine stumbled at the NorCal Open, losing its last three games to Cal, UC Irvine and Pacific. After that, the Waves lost a home conference match to USC before beating Fresno Pacific 21-4 their last time out. James Perry leads the Waves with 16 goals, followed by Danny White with 15 and Nick Cooper with 12. On defense White leads Pepperdine with 18 steals, followed by Travis Gough with 16.
USC - The two-time defending national champions head into the SoCal Tournament with a perfect 11-0 record. After knocking off Cal and UCLA to win the NorCal Open title, USC has shown it has the squad to beat anyone in the country. Jeremy Davie leads the Trojans with 22 goals, followed by Nikola Vavic with 20 and Matthew Burton with 19. Joel Dennerley has been impressive in goal for Southern Cal this year, only allowing 4.5 goals per game.
REDLANDS - The Bulldogs go into their game against the Trojans with a 5-7 mark on the year. Redlands will be looking to avenge its season-opening 23-3 loss to the Trojans at the UC Irvine Invitational. In their last three games, The Bulldogs have lost to Cal, Santa Clara and UC Davis by a combined score of 41-23.
TEAM LEADERS
Nick Rascon has a team-high 18 goals and a 2.25 per game average. Taylor Clute ranks second with 15 goals, followed by Alexsandr Petrovic with 14. In goal, Matt Kubeck has 44 saves with a goals-against average of 9.23.
