Long Beach, Calif. - No. 52 Long Beach State tennis will make a second attempt at hosting a home opener, hosting a key matchup against No. 48 San Diego State at the Rhodes Tennis Center at 1 p.m. Saturday. The 49ers' first home match last weekend against CS Fullerton was postponed due to rain.
Long Beach State carries a 2-1 record into the match which pairs two closely ranked non-conference opponents in the Aztecs and the 49ers, with the winner getting an important step ahead in NCAA Tournament seeding as well as ranking points and building a resume for a potential at-large berth into the tournament if necessary.
The 49ers will be looking to continue the success that they found two weeks ago on their East Coast swing, when they won the doubles point against both Maryland and George Washington and had complete control of singles play in two 6-1 wins. Deborah Armstrong and Anais Dallara, two returning veterans will continue to anchor the top of the lineup while the team will also look to three freshman to continue their early success in Jaklin Alawi, Anna Jeczmionka and Sarah Cantlay.
The San Diego State match is the only match of the weekend for the 49ers. Coming up next following the Atzecs is Long Beach State's Big West opener on the road at UC Riverside on Friday, Feb. 19.
