The Beach falls in sudden victory to UC Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The No. 8 Long Beach State men's water polo team lost, 11-10, in sudden victory to No. 6 UC Santa Barbara in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference game Saturday. With the loss, the 49ers (7-8, 0-2) remain winless in MPSF play while the Gauchos (10-5, 1-1) drew their conference record back to even.
Senior Patrick van der Linde, sophomore Carter Taylor and freshman Dan Matulis led the 49ers with two goals each. Juniors Jordan Koeppen, Shane Luth and Alexsandr Petrovic each scored a goal while sophomore Brian Schiefer found the back of the cage one time. Goalie Matt Kubeck finished with 12 saves and freshman Nick Rascon failed to score at least one goal in a game for the first this year.
Both squads played tight early on with UC Santa Barbara holding a 3-2 lead over Long Beach State at the end of the first period. The 49ers tightened things up on defense in the second period to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.
The Gauchos outscored the 49ers 2-1 in the third period to cut the lead to one heading into the fourth period.
In the fourth period, Taylor and Matulis found the back of the cage to open up a 10-7 lead over the Gauchos but UCSB battled back with three scores to send the game into overtime tied at 10-10.
After two scoreless overtime periods, UC Santa Barbara's Milos Golic found the back of the cage 36 seconds into sudden victory to give the Gauchos their first MPSF conference win of the year.
UC Santa Barbara's Golic led all-scorers and tied his career game-high with seven goals. Matt Gronow, Evan Dellinger, Brian Shoemaker and Joe Plume each chipped in a goal for the Gauchos. Goalies Fraser Bunn (4) and Myles Christian (8) combined for eight saves.
The 49ers have two MPSF conference games slated for next weekend. In the first game, The Beach will return to action at home when it hosts Pepperdine at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 29 at 49er Pool. In the second game of the weekend, Long Beach State will go on the road to face UCLA at 12 p.m. on Sunday, October 31 at Spieker Aquatics Center on the UCLA campus.
