
Long Beach State Women Fall To Cal Poly, 74-66

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Long Beach State women's basketball team hung with host Cal Poly, but was unable to pull away late in the game as the 49ers fell to the Mustangs, 74-66, Sunday afternoon at Mott Gym.
Freshman Adelle Walton was 3-for-3 from behind the arc to lead The Beach with a career-high 16 points, while junior Whitney Fields notched her second consecutive double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Melanie Lisnock chipped in a season-best 11 points.
Long Beach State (3-10, 0-2 Big West Conference) trailed by just four at 46-42 with 14:39 remaining in the second half. The Mustangs would eventually go up by as many as 13 before the 49ers staged a comeback late in the game. After a three-pointer by Walton, The Beach cut the deficit to six points (69-63) at the 2:08 mark, but CP outscored the 49ers 5-3 in the final minutes to hang on for the win.
LBSU dented the scoreboard first as Walton hit a pair of free throws at the 19:48 mark, but Cal Poly quickly responded, going up 4-2 after a layup by Kristina Santiago. The 49ers tied the game at 4-4 on a Fields jumper before the Mustangs went on a 12-2 run to take the lead for good.
The Mustangs led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but Walton hit a 12-foot jumper with four seconds remaining, giving CP a 37-28 lead heading into the break.
Cal Poly (8-5, 1-1 BWC) shot 50.9 percent (29-57) from the field, while holding the 49ers to a 39.0 field goal percentage (23-59).
Kristina Santiago scored a career-high 26 points and Becky Tratter added 15 to lead the Mustangs.
Long Beach State will return to the Walter Pyramid as it hosts the NCAA `Pack the House Challenge' on Thursday, Jan. 8, when it takes on Big West foe Pacific at 1 p.m. (PST).
