LONG BEACH-- Incoming freshman Julie Luzar (Anaheim/El Dorado HS) jump started her college career this past weekend by winning the Intercollegiate Tennis Association summer circuit Singles Championship stop in Ventura on Monday.
Luzar, who went 5-0 over the three-day event, picked up wins over inbound Michigan freshman Michelle Sulahian (7-6, 4-6, 10-3) and Michigan State's Michele Murphy (7-6, 6-0).
"I am very excited for Julie and for the program," said 49er Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello, whose program has gone to six NCAA Tournaments. "When we signed Julie in the fall, we saw a multi-tooled game that would continue to mature. She beat strong opponents that are headed to or at major universities. We are excited about her arrival this fall."
Luzar, a quarter-finalist at the CIF Southern Section Championships in both 2006 and 2007, has seen her tennisrecruiting.net national class ranking climb from 104, when she signed a National Intent, to 51, in the latest rankings.
The ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) is the governing body for NCAA college tennis and conducts four summer circuit tournaments in each of eight regions throughout the summer for inbound and current college players.
Luzar is one of three incoming 49er freshman this September. She will be joined by Rachel Manasse (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) and Anais Dallara ( Valbonne , France /College De L'Eganaude). The three freshman join five returning starters including three-time Big West Player of the Year Hannah Grady and the Big West Freshman of the Year Stephanie Jeanes.
