Des Moines, Iowa - Long Beach State finished up their time on the first day of the NCAA National Championships hosted by Drake University. Senior Chris Richardson stands in seventh-place in the decathlon with 3,936 points after the opening day of competition.
Richardson was as high as third place in the decathlon after three events, but faltered slightly in the 400m, not one of his stronger events in the 10-event competition. However, the javelin still remains in the second day, which will give the senior a chance to make up some ground against his competition.
In other action on the day, Long Beach State's 4x100 team was unable to advance to the finals, running a time of 40.17 in the event. In addition to being a member of that team, Brent Gray also had his first individual race of the meet Wednesday, running a 10.85 in the fastest heat of the day in the 100m dash, missing qualification for the finals.
Gray will have another shot to stay for some extra time in Des Moines tomorrow in his signature event, the 200m, which holds its preliminaries tomorrow prior to a Saturday finals.
Out in the field, Katelyn Ciarelli finished 18th out of 29 competitors in the women's discus, improving on her initial seeding while throwing 158'2" on her final attempt. The top 12 throwers in the discus moved on to Friday's finals.
