SAN DIEGO-- Danny Espinosa hit a grand slam in the first inning and Long Beach State (31-18) cruised past host San Diego State (30-23) 10-0 on Tuesday evening, sweeping the season series.
Espinosa's first career grand slam gave the Dirtbags a 4-0 lead off of former LBSU pitcher Brandon Villalobos (0-2) in the first, as LBSU added two runs in the second and three runs in the seventh.
Five Long Beach State pitchers combined on a one-hitter, retiring the final 14 batters of the game. It was the second one-hitter of the season.
Travis Howell had two hits, as did Shane Peterson.
Dustin Rasco (2-0) pitched the first two perfect innings, striking out three in his first career start. Peterson followed by giving up an infield hit to Pat Colwell off his glove in the third, before Tyler Topp followed with four no-hit and scoreless innings, striking out four, before Jason Markovitz had a perfect eighth and Bryan Shaw had a perfect ninth.
Jordan Casas drove in his first career run in the seventh to make it 8-0. Two RBI singles in the second made it 6-0 off of Craig Rasmussen, the third of 10 pitchers for the Aztecs.
Villalobos pitched the 2004 for LBSU, playing with first baseman Brandon Godfrey, who redshirted that season, the only player on the current roster that played with the Aztec senior left hander.
The Beach returns to conference play this weekend, at Cal Poly for a three-game series starting with National Pitcher of the Week Andrew Liebel (7-2, 1.69) on Friday at 6 p.m.
