SAN DIEGO-- Seventh-seeded California (17-9) defeated No. 10 seed Long Beach State (15-16), 10-7, in the first round of the MPSF Championships Thursday afternoon at Aztec Aquaplex in a match that saw four ties and three lead changes in the first half.
Cecilia Canetti, Lauren Sieprath and Dayna Wawryznski had two goals a piece, as the game was tied 2-2 at the end of the first period and saw the 49ers trail just 5-4 at the half .
The No. 5-ranked Bears would not relinquish a 5-4 lead with 2:51 left in the second period, as Cal converted on a 6-on-5 opportunity to take the lead in the second and then did not allow a goal in the third period, upping the score to 8-4 after three periods.
The 49ers had one last breath in them as they scored at the 3:53 mark in the fourth, and another two minutes later to pull to within 8-6, prior to two final goals by Cal.
The 49ers next play on Saturday at 10:20 a.m. against 11th-seeded CS Northridge. The highest the 49ers can finish is in ninth place with those games coming on Sunday.
