
49ers Fall To USC, 10-6

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Senior Dayna Wawrzynski tallied two goals in her final home game as a 49er, but third-ranked USC got three goals each from Veronika Bartunkova and Michelle Stein to come away with a 10-6 win over Long Beach State at the 49er Campus Pool. USC improves to 17-6 overall and finishes 10-2 in the MPSF. The 49ers fell to 15-15 overall and 4-8 in league action.
Five different players scored goals for the 49ers, as Cecilia Canetti, Branwyn Lee, Rachelle Denaro and Lauren Sieprath all tallied goals. 49er goalie Kristen Stragier had eight goalies saves on the day.
USC jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter before the 49ers got on the scoreboard. Kristen Dronberger tallied goals at 7:12 and 6:26 to give USC a quick 2-0 lead. After Bartunkova tallied her first goal of the day at 2:51 giving USC a 4-0 lead, the 49ers got on the scoreboard at 0:51 on a five-meter penalty goal by Lee. Sieprath opened up the second quarter with a goal to cut the deficit to 4-2, but USC countered with three consecutive goals, to take a 7-2 lead. Long Beach ended the half with a Canetti goal at 0:20 to make the deficit 7-3 at the half.
The 49ers looked like they would get right back in the game as Denaro scored at 7:09 in the third quarter to make the score 7-4. USC then responded with three straight goals, two by Stein, to grab a 10-4 lead after three. Wawrzynski scored both of her goals in the fourth quarter for the 49ers.
USC's starting goalie Tumua Anae recorded four saves and back-up Whitney Morgan had three saves in the second half.
The 49ers will next be in action on Thursday, April 24 when they compete at the MPSF Championships in San Diego.
