LONG BEACH - Freshman Lauren Sieprath scored three goals for Long Beach State, but Arizona State out-scored the 49ers 6-2 in the final 14 minutes of the game to come away with a 9-6 win in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) women's water polo game at the 49er Campus Pool. ASU improves to 12-9 overall and 2-4 in the MPSF while the 49ers fall to 8-9 and 3-3 in league action.
Addison McGrath tallied four goals for the Sun Devils and Katy Lawlor two, as ASU scored four consecutive goals in the third quarter to overtake a 4-3 Long Beach lead. After the 49ers pull to within 8-6 with 2:08 left, ASU put the game away as Traci Aparicio scored with 1:49 left to give the Sun Devils a three-goal margin.
Danya Wawrynzski had two goals for the 49ers, both coming on five-meter penalty shots in the fourth quarter. Keala O'Sullivan scored the other Long Beach State goal.
ASU jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first quarter on goals by McGrath (4:33) and Kelly Phelps. Long Beach responded in the second quarter with three Sieprath goals to tie the game at 3-3 at the half.
O'Sullivan's goal at 7:22 in the third quarter gave the 49ers a brief 4-3 lead. ASU would tally four straight goals in the quarter to take a 7-4 advantage after three. McGrath scored at 6:21 and 5:22 to put ASU up 5-4, and then Bonnie Miles (4:50) and Lawlor (0:07) closed out the quarter.
In goal, the Sun Devils Caylinn Wallace recorded 15 saves on the afternoon, including six in the fourth quarter alone. The 49ers Kristen Stragier had eight saves.
The 49ers will next be in action on March 15 when they play at San Diego State.
