49ers Head North for Two MPSF Matches

LONG BEACH--Long Beach State Water Polo (11-10, 3-4 MPSF), winners of a season-high three in a row will join a contingent of 49er Athletic teams in Northern California this weekend when the 49ers take on the No. 2-ranked Cardinal (15-3, 5-1 MPSF) on Saturday at 7 p.m. and No. 9-ranked San Jose State (10-10, 2-5 MPSF) on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Following this weekend, the 49ers will play seven-straight at home to close out the regular season.
The 49ers are currently tied for seventh place in the conference standings, knotted up with three teams that are 3-4 in conference play this season. The Cardinal are one of four teams with five wins, while UCLA leads the pack at a perfect 7-0.
Other 49er teams up in Northern California include the baseball team, which plays at Cal, Stanford and Fresno State and the softball team that is at UC Davis.
Stanford's Lauren Silver is currently third in the MPSF in scoring, while LBSU's Dayna Wawrzysnki and Lauren Sieprath are tied for 12th. Forty-Niner freshman goalkeeper Kristen Stragier is seventh in the league in saves. Stanford is second in the league in scoring and third in goals allowed, the 49ers are eighth in scoring and 11th in defense. SJSU is sixth in scoring and eighth in defense as Juliet Moss as a team-best 35 goals.
Stanford has won 15 of 17 meetings all-time, with the last win over the Cardinal coming in 2005. Against the Spartans, LBSU trails the all-time series 13-7 with SJSU winning the last five meetings.
Senior Dayna Wawrzysnki continues to lead the 49ers in scoring with 37 goals this season, while freshman Lauren Sieprath has 30 goals. Stragier has 173 saves this season and is on the verge of becoming the fifth 49er ever to save 200 shots in a single-season. Her save total is ninth-best all-time.
