LONG BEACH-- Long Beach State (11-10) swept their two matches on Tuesday, defeating Maryland 16-5, before a five-goal fourth quarter gave them a 9-6 victory over Princeton. Dayna Wawrzynski had six goals on the day, including four in the opener against the Terrapins, while Kelsie Emerick had four in the latter game against the Tigers.
In the night cap against the Tigers (11-7), each team complimented each other over the first three periods, as Lauren Sabb gave the Tigers a 4-3 lead with 2:46 remaining in the half, only to have LBSU answer with one of four scores from Emerick to tie it 4-4 on a penalty shot with 2:18 left. Phoebe Champion then gave Princeton a 5-4 lead with 6:20 in the fourth, before the 49ers answered with three-straight to take a 7-5 lead. Wawrzynski's first of two goals in the period made it 7-5 with 4:32 remaining, before Sabb answered with her own at 3:59 to make it 7-6. LBSU though, paced by Wawrzynski (3:50) and Emerick (2:11) would pull away over the final four minutes to win their second of the day.
The 49ers opened the day with a 15-6 win over Maryland (16-7) paced by four goals a piece from Wawrzynski and Branwyn Lee. LBSU jumped out to a 3-0 first quarter lead paced by the first goal by Wawrzynski The 49ers then led 6-2 at the break as Wawrzysnki added two goals in the second period before the 49ers exploded for seven goals in the third period.
Stragier had 14 saves in the net for the 49ers in the first game and added seven in the second contest.
Lee started off the scoring to make it 8-2 with two scores and then added two more goals with two minues left to make it 12-4 with 1:23 remaining.
