LONG BEACH-- Western Illinois (1-6) snapped No. 7-ranked Long Beach State's (9-3) season-long seven game win streak behind six strong innings from Eric Eden (1-1), defeating the Dirtbags 3-0.
Five pitchers combined on a four-hitter for the Leathernecks,
LBSU threatened in the ninth, putting the first two runners on against Ryan Schmidt, before Frank Zenisek came on and got three popups for the save.
Eden at one point retired nine in a row, pitching six scoreless innings, while scattering three hits. He walked four and struck out three on 107 pitches.
Western Illinois made three great defensive plays in the outfield, one by centerfielder Brett Pendell in the third and two by rightfielder Kenny Price in the fourth and sixth innings.
Tyler Topp (0-1) gave up two runs in the first, on a groundout, followed by a two-out triple by Cooper Stewart to give WIU an early 2-0 lead. Tyler Metcalf added a two-out, RBI single in the third to make it 3-0.
Topp could not get out of the fourth, leaving two runners on for Adam Wilk. Wilk got a strikeout and groundout to keep it at 3-0. Wilk pitched an inning and two thirds of scoreless baseball. Nick Vincent struck out the first four over 1.2 innings late in the contest.
The Dirtbags return to action this weekend, when they host USC on Friday and Sunday, and play at USC's Dedeaux Field on Saturday.
