49ers Head to Two-Day Triton Invite Beach Opened Season with Two Wins in Bakersfield Last Week
February 7, 2008 FULL STATISTICS 49ERS TRAVEL TO TRITON INVITE The 49ers (2-0) following two victories last Saturday over CS Bakersfield (8-7) and Fresno Pacific (22-7) will open up the two-day, four-game Triton Invitational in La Jolla and UC San Diego with the Roadrunners for the second-straight time. Cecilia Canetti scored four goals in the win at CSUB, including the game-winner with 2:12 remaining. The match will be at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday as part of pool play. LBSU is in the same pool as top-seed UC Irvine, the third-seeded Roadrunners and fourth-seeded Brown Bears. The highest ranked teams in the field are No. 6 San Diego State, No. 12 ranked LMU, No. 9 UC Irvine and No. 8 UC Davis. If the 49ers win, they play either UCI or Brown at 6 p.m., if they lose, they play at 4:45 p.m. The team will then play at either 9:15 a.m. or 11:45 a.m. on Sunday. and then again later in the day. The 49ers have twice won the Triton Invitational, in 2003 and 2004.They finished ninth last year. UC SAN DIEGO TOURNAMENT PAGE AT THE HELM Catharine von Schwarz, a member of the U.S. National Team for eight years, is in her second season as the head coach for LBSU. her overall career record is 10-19, having gone 8-19 last season. Forty-Niner water polo has had winning seasons in five of the last six years and won at least 20 games in three-straight seasons. Nine players all-time have been members of senior national teams, including current freshman Lauren Sieprath. SCORING LEADERS SO FAR The 49ers four players who have scored at least four goals so far this season, led by Cecilia Canetti's five and four goals a piece from Branwyn Lee, Dayna Wawrzynski and Kalina Houck. Junior Keala O'Sullivan has chipped in three goals, while three other players have at least two. YOUNGSTERS IN 2008 The 49ers feature 17 underclassmen on the roster of which 12 are freshmen. Three freshmen were starters this past weekend in: state MVP and goalie Kristen Straiger, All-CIF pick Kelsie Emerick and Canadian Junior National team member Meaghan Leonard. FAMILY TREES The 49ers have a few younger siblings with strong family trees. Senior Dayna Wawrzynski is the younger sister of Drue and daughter of Paul, both 49er All-Americans, while freshman Brooke Figge is the younger sister of Ericka, an All-American at USC and a member of the U.S. National Team. Sieprath's sister Anna is the captain for the New Zealand National Team. Drue Wawrzynski was also on the senior U.S. National Team for a year as well. INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE This year's top returning scorer is sophomore Cecilia Canetti, a MPSF All-Freshman pick from last year, that scored 24 goals in 2007. She is one of three players with international experience, as she has teamed with her sister and former 49er All-American Marina Canetti on the Brazilian National Team. Freshmen Lauren Sieprath (New Zealand) and Meaghan Leonard (Canada) continue the 49ers tradition of bringing in foreign national teammers, as Tara Campbell (Canada) and Roberta Stewart (New Zealand) were both All-Americans for the 49ers. |
