LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Senior Reid Tomassi tallied four goals, including two in overtime, to lift the seventh-ranked Long Beach State men's water polo team to an 11-8 overtime win at Loyola Marymount on Thursday afternoon. The 49ers snapped a short two-game losing skid and improved to 8-4 overall. The tenth-ranked Lions fell to 5-9 with their third loss in a row.

Tomassi scored his third goal of the game at 2:05 in the first overtime period to give the 49ers an 8-7 lead. Nick Korsgaden then tallied at 1:37, with the eventual game-winner, to give Long Beach a 9-7 lead after one overtime. In the second OT, Ash Blythen scored at 2:31 to push the advantage to 10-7. After an LMU tally, Tomassi scored again at 1:21 to close out the 11-8 victory.

Justin Koeppen and Jake Kinne each scored twice for the 49ers, while Jeff Greenwood scored the other Long Beach goal. Goalie Steve MacKenzie finished with nine saves.

For the Lions, Mark Milovic had four goals and Tim Hummel added three.

Long Beach jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter as Tomassi tallied two goals (5:32, 0:01). Koeppen's second goal of the day, with just three seconds left in the half gave Long Beach a 6-3 halftime lead over the Lions. The 49ers dominated offensively in the first half as the Lions misfired on several shots on goal. In the second half though it was all LMU.

The Lions tallied two goals in the third quarter to pull to within 6-5. Hummel's third goal of the day, at 5:20 in the fourth, tied the game and LMU took its first lead since an early 1-0 advantage, as Milovic scored with 2:43 remaining to give the Lions a 7-6 lead. After a couple of turnovers on offense, the 49ers got one last chance with 13 seconds remaining. Kinne took the ball up the right side and scored with five seconds left to tie the game at 7-7 and send it to overtime. The goal was the only 49er goal in the second half. In the overtime period the 49ers out-scored the Lions 4-1.

Long Beach will next be in action on Saturday, October 6 when they play at No. 12-ranked UC San Diego at 12 pm in La Jolla.<>
