
49ers Win 12-10 At UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Junior Pavle Filipovic scored a career-high four goals to lead the seventh-ranked Long Beach State men's water polo team to a 12-10 win at No. 12 UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon. The 49ers improve to 9-4 on the season with their second consecutive road victory.
Jeff Greenwood and Nick Korsgaden each tallied two goals to the 49er cause and senior goalie Steve MacKenzie recorded 14 goalie saves. Steven Donohoe led the Tritons with four goals.
UCSD scored on its first posession of the game as Daniel Garcia scored his first of two goals on the day, giving the Tritons their only lead of the contest, 1-0. The 49ers countered with three consecutive goals as Greenwood, Reid Tomassi and Justin Koeppen scored. UCSD cut the deficit to 3-2 at the end of the quarter and then tied the game at 3-3 early in the second quarter before the 49er offense countered with three consecutive goals again. Sean Greiner, Jake Kinne and Filipovic all scored to give Long Beach a 6-3 lead with 3:12 left in the half. After a UCSD tally, Filipovic scored again at 2:01 and the 49ers closed out the half as Greenwood tallied with 12 seconds left giving Long Beach an 8-4 halftime lead. In the third quarter the 49ers put up three more goals and led 11-7 at that juncture. UCSD would get no closer than two goals the remainder of the contest.
The 49ers will be home on Sunday, October 7 as they host Brown (12 pm) and MIT (2 pm) at the Campus Pool.
