BAKERSFIELD-- Long Beach State (2-0) opened up its first weekend of play with two victories at the CS Bakersfield Inviational, defeating the host Roadrunners 8-7, before defeating Fresno Pacific with a record 22-7 score.
Catharine von Schwarz's 2008 season opened with an 8-7 win over the host Road Runners. The 49ers, featuring 12 freshmen, led 7-4 after three periods and held on to win as Cecilia Canetti had four goals. Canetti scored the eventual game winner with 2:12 left in the fourth period on a 6-on-5 opportunity to give the 49ers an 8-6 advantage. Stragier made nine saves in the cage in her first collegiate game.
The 49ers then set a school-record for goals scored with 22, as every player but one scored, as Branwyn Lee had four goals and Kalina O'Sullivan added three. The previous high for goals scored was 17, done twice, as the 15-goal margin of victory was the second largest.
"I think it was a good opening weekend for us," said von Schwarz. "We still have a lot to work on prior to opening up with Bakersfield again to start the UC San Diego Tournament, but it was a good start."
The 49ers are next in action when they travel to the two-day UC San Diego Triton Invitational starting next Saturday.
