LA JOLLA, CA-- Long Beach State (3-1) split their two games at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational, defeating CS Bakersfield 11-7, before losing to No. 9-ranked UC Irvine 7-4. The 49ers now can play for as high as fifth place, starting at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday.
In the winner's bracket game, the 49ers fell behind 4-2 at halftime as they could not come back against UCI, as New Zealand National Team member Lauren Sieprath scored a goal in both games in her first collegiate action. Kristen Straiger made 11 saves against the Anteaters in the loss, after making six against CSUB.
The 49ers opened up the Triton Invitational with an 11-7 win over CS Bakersfield for the second-straight Saturday, led by four goals from Meaghan Leonard and three goals from Branwyn Lee. The 49ers went up 3-1 after the first eight minutes and were up 7-2 at the break, never looking back from that point. LBSU defeated the Roadrunners last weekend 8-7.
The seventh place match, if they lose to start the game on Sunday, will play at 1 p.m., if they win, they will play 2:15 p.m. for fifth place.
