NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Down by eight with 5:22 to play, the 49ers came all the way back to grab a 49-48 win on the road at Cal State Northridge. Karina Figueroa led the 49ers with 24 points, hitting a career high five three-pointers.
Down 46-42 three minutes to go, the 49ers made a pair of stops and took the lead following a jumper from Brett Timmons and Figueroa's final three-pointer of the night. The 49ers were unable to extend their lead any more than one point however, and a pair of Katrina Thompson free throws put Cal State Northridge ahead by one point with 33 seconds in the game. However, coming out of a timeout, the 49ers found Musina who was able to drive baseline and score the winning basket with 9.8 seconds to go.
The 49ers put full-court pressure on the Matadors from that point, and Figueroa forced Tonicia Tademy to dribble on the sideline going up the court, giving the ball back to the Beach and sealing the win.
Both teams struggled through a very slow first half, as neither team was able to score early, going the first three minutes without any baskets. The 49ers took even longer, as Long Beach State finally got on the board just after the 15-minute mark on a Brett Timmons layup, and the score would remain 3-2 for the next four minutes as offense was at a premium.
The 49ers finally took a 4-3 lead after a Kaiti O'Brien jumper and moved ahead for good in the first-half at 9-7 after a Musina three-pointer. The 49ers would not give up the lead from that point in the first half. Cal State Northridge came back to tie the game at 13, but a three from Karina Figueroa put Long Beach State back up three at 16-13. The 49ers wouldn't score again in the half, but held the Matadors scoreless as well except for a pair of Ligon free throws to take a 16-15 lead into the break.
Coming into the half with a one-point lead, Cal State Northridge was able to take the largest lead of the game of at 41-33 with a 15-2 run keyed by solid post play from Katie Holloway, who led the Matadors with 23 points. However, the 49ers held tough and cut the lead back to three points after two treys from Musina and Figueroa.
Long Beach State returns to action on the 28th of February, when they kick off the first half of a double-header with the men's teams on the road at UC Irvine. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Irvine.
