LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's basketball team (2-7) was unable to recover from a 21-point first-half deficit as it dropped its third straight game with a 66-49 loss to Brigham Young Saturday evening at the Walter Pyramid.
Junior Courtney Jacob recorded her fifth double-figure scoring game of the season with a game-high 17 points, while also adding five rebounds and three blocks. Junior Lauren Sims and sophomore Melanie Lisnock chipped in seven points apiece for the 49ers.
BYU (8-2) dented the scoreboard first but Sims quickly responded, scoring the 49ers' first points of the evening with a jumper at the 18:13 mark. After trading baskets over the next two minutes, the Cougars proceeded to go on a 15-4 run to take a 21-8 advantage with 9:33 left to play.
Brigham Young maintained its double-digit lead for the remainder of the half and went up 38-17 at the break as Shawnee Slade hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds.
The Cougars shot 45.7 percent from the field, while holding the 49ers to just 27.8 percent in the first period. LBSU also committed 15 turnovers, while forcing just four BYU miscues.
Despite an improved performance in the second half, including 14 points from Jacob, The Beach was unable to erase the deficit. The closest the 49ers came was at the 1:51 mark when Lisnock cut the Cougar lead to 14 with a three-point play.
The Cougars, who extended their unbeaten streak to six games, were paced by Slade's 14 points.
Long Beach State will continue non-conference action on Monday, Dec. 22, when it welcomes New Mexico State to the Walter Pyramid. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. (PST).
