Weathers Scores 500th Career Victory LOS ANGELES, CA-- Jason Tweedy drove in a career-best six runs and went 4-for-5 at the plate to give Head Coach Mike Weathers his 500th career victory, as No. 11-ranked Long Beach State (35-14) won its 13th-straight, following a 21-2 win at Loyola Marymount (22-33-1). Tweedy came a triple short of the cycle, hitting his first Division-I homer in the proces, while Matt Cline went 3-for-5 day with two RBIs. Chris Nelson added another five hits as part of a season-high 24-hit attack. AJ Pinocchio hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the eighth. Weathers is in his 17th year as a head coach (500-405-2), helming programs at Utah, his alma mater Chapman and the last six years at LBSU. It was the 11th time over the last 13 games that LBSU had scored at least eight runs, as the win streak continues to be the fourth longest in school history. Omar Arif (5-5) went the first three pre-determined scoreless innings for the win, using just 36 pitches, retiring the final seven batters, while giving up just one hit. Vance Worley made his first appearance since April 5 (elbow), pitching a perfect fourth and giving up a single in the fifth, before being relieved after 15 pitches. Russ Lowell also made his collegiate debut in the game. LBSU sent 26 men to the plate, batting around twice, from the sixth to the eighth innings, scoring 13 times. The Dirtbags got on the board in the first following a leadoff walk by TJ Mittelstaedt. Mittelstaedt scored from first after Nelson hit it off the 37-foot wall for a double to give LBSU a 1-0 lead. The Dirtbags tacked on four runs in the fourth to lead 5-0, as Tweedy's first home run of the season, a three-run shot, made it 4-0. A fielder's choice then made it 5-0. LBSU added three runs in the fifth to lead 8-0 as a two-run double by Cline was followed by a sacrifice fly by Tweedy to make it 8-0. Tweedy drove in two more runs as part of a three-run sixth inning to make it 11-2. Pinocchio's slam then made it 21-2 in the eighth as part of a six-run inning. The Beach return to Big West play for the final six games, hosting UC Riverside, who enters the weekend a game back of the Dirtbags, starting on Friday and then travel to CS Fullerton to close out the regular season. LBSU magic number is five to clinch the conference title. |
