LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 11-ranked Long Beach State (34-15, 13-3 Big West) lost for the first time since April 21, as No. 16-ranked UC Riverside (34-17, 13-3 Big West) moved into a first place tie with the Dirtbags following a 7-4 finale. The loss snaps a 13-game win streak by The Beach, the fourth-longest in school-history. LBSU gave up season high 10 walks, threw three wild pitches, hit a batter and made three errors. They also left 13 runners on base.

Riverside ace James Simmons (10-2) shut down the Dirtbags over the first six innings, scattering seven hits, while giving up just one run, walking one and striking out five. Stephen Penny pitched the final three innings for his third save.

The Beach scored two runs off of Penny in the ninth to cut the lead to three.

Manny McElroy (5-2) lasted just three and two-third innings, walking four and giving up two first innings runs as the Highlanders took an early 2-0 lead. The last time the righthander lost was on April 21, a span of three wins and four appearances. Reliever Adam Wilk fell a part in the fifth, giving up two runs on two walks, unloading a couple of wild pitches and two hits as UCR built a 6-1 lead.

The series continues on Saturday and Sunday with both games at 1 p.m. Saturday's game has been moved up an hour.
