Riverside Takes Series Behind Montgomery LONG BEACH, CA-- UC Riverside's Matt Montgomery gave up nine hits over eight and two-third innings to give No. 16-ranked UC Riverside (35-17, 14-3) the series with No.11-ranked Long Beach State (34-16, 13-4) and a one-game lead over the Dirtbags in the Big West standings following a 2-1 victory. Montgomery, a sophomore, was making his second career start and had thrown just 22.2 innings this season, moving to the rotation after Marc Rzepczynski broke a finger on his pitching hand earlier this week. Montgomery benefitted from four double plays today and pitched over two over the minimum heading into the ninth. Andrew Liebel pitched all nine for LBSU, retiring the final eight batters he faced for his first complete game of his career, as he scattered eight hits. Both pitchers were relievers coming into the season. Joe Kelly struck out Danny Espinosa with a runner on first for his fifth save. TJ Mittelstaedt and Shane Peterson chased Montgomery in the ninth, as Mittelstaedt hit a one-out double and scored on an RBI single by Peterson to cut the lead to 2-1.UCR took a 2-0 lead in the fifth off a two-run single by Ryan Goetz as part of a three-hit inning. Highlander centerfielder Carl Uhl was scratched from the original lineup 45 minutes before first pitch due to residual effects of getting hit on the ankle in last night's contest. The finale of the series will be on Sunday at 1 p.m. |
