UC Riversides Comes Back to Sweep Series LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 16-ranked UC Riverside (36-17, 15-3) took a two-game lead with three games to play in the Big West standings, coming back to defeat No. 11-ranked Long Beach State (34-17, 13-5 Big West) with three runs in the ninth and another in the 10th to win 7-6. LBSU is now tied with UC Irvine, who swept CS Northridge. A sacrifice fly in the 10th gave UCR a 7-6 lead, as Vance Worley (1-2) took the loss, giving up two hits in the inning, before Dustin Rasco gave up a one-out fly ball to right to score the go-ahead run. It was the first time this season the Dirtbags have been swept and first series loss in a month. Joe Kelly (3-1) pitched the final two and one-third innings for the win. LBSU closer Bryan Shaw gave up three runs in the ninth, his fifth blown save of the year, to let UCR tie it at 6-6. Shaw gave up a bases loaded walk, before an infield single and ensuing error by third baseman Taylor Krick, one of four errors by LBSU, allowed the Highlanders to tie it with two outs. Omar Arif was in line for his second win of the week, leaving with a 6-3 lead. It was Arif's longest outing since April 20 as he went five and two-third scoreless innings, giving up three hits, while striking out three. David Roberts got the final out in the seventh and pitched a scoreless eighth leading to Shaw in the ninth, striking out three in the process. The Dirtbags chased UCR starter Pat Cassa from the game in the fifth, as the lefthander gave up three runs in the inning and LBSU took a 4-3 lead. Cassa would load the bases in the inning, before hitting Robert Perry to push across the go-ahead run. A throwing error by Dan Runzler with two outs in the sixth led to another run, giving The Beach a 5-3 lead. An RBI single by Matt Cline in the inning then made it 6-3. Shane Peterson exited after just an inning, giving up three runs (one earned), as LBSU made two errors in the inning to give the Highlanders a 3-0 lead in the first. Arif then came on into the seventh. The Beach close out the regular season next weekend at CS Fullerton for a three-game series. |
