Fullerton Comes Back to Beat The Beach in Game One

FULLERTON, CA-- Evan McArthur's two-out double off of David Roberts (3-1) in the eighth completed a five-run comeback for No. 28-ranked CS Fullerton (33-21, 10-9 Big West), leading the Titans to a 7-6 victory over visiting No. 16-ranked Long Beach State (35-18, 13-6 Big West). It was LBSU's fourth-straight loss and third by a single run.

With UC Irvine winning at UC Riverside, the Anteaters moved to within a game of first, the Dirtbags remained two back.

Brandon Godfrey hit two doubles and drove in a run for the Dirtbags.

Wes Roemer (9-6) gave up a career-high six runs, but got the win, pitching a complete game eight hitter. Roemer struck out 10 as he retired the final 12 batters of the game.

Manny McElroy had a scoreless one-hitter until the fifth, when Evan McArthur's solo shot cut the Dirtbag lead to 4-1. McElroy had retired six in a row to that point, and pitched to just two over the minimum. McElroy would not get out of the sixth as the Titans tied it with five runs, at 6-6.

The Dirtbags jumped over former National Player of the Year candidate, Roemer, with two runs in the first and another one in the second to lead 3-0. An RBI double by Shane Peterson made it 1-0, before a seeing-eye single to the right side made it 2-0 by Robert Perry. TJ Mittelstaedt's two-out single then scored Jason Tweedy from third to make 3-0. Back-to-back doubles in the fourth made it 4-0.

Matt Wallach's grand slam in the sixth was part of a five-run inning for the Titans as CS Fullerton tied it at 6-6 and chased McElroy from the game with one out.

The series continues on Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
