Three Players Earn First Team Singles Honors

IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State sophomore Hannah Grady was selected on Tuesday as the Big West Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. The 49ers had three players named first team all-league and two doubles teams as well. The 49ers, 17-8, won their fourth consecutive Big West Conference Championship this past weekend.
Grady, the Big West Player and Freshman of the Year in 2006, is 18-7 this season at #1 singles. She has been ranked in five of the nine individual rankings throughout the year and has five wins this season over nationally-ranked opponents. Also earning first team honors in singles were junior Stephanie Bengson and sophomore Katy Williams. Bengson is 18-5 in singles play this year, playing the majority of her matches at #3 singles. She has been hot as of late, winning 13 of her last 14 matches. She was a second team pick last year. Williams is 13-10 this year compiling a 12-7 mark at#2 singles and a 1-3 record at the #1 spot. She was a first team all-league selection in 2006.
In doubles, Grady and Weeks and Bengson and Williams both earned first team accolades. Grady and Weeks are 17-7 this spring, including a 13-3 mark at #2 doubles. Bengson and Williams are 14-8 this spring, with a 10-6 mark at the #1 doubles position. Grady and Weeks were first team selections last year, while Williams was first team with Sandra Rocha in doubles in 2006 and Bengson earned honorable mention honors with Rachael Porsz.
The 2007 Big West Coach of the Year was UC Irvine's Mike Edles. Brittany Blalock of Cal Poly was named the league's Freshman of the Year.
