Long Beach Defeats Cal Poly, 4-0

INDIAN WELLS, CA-- For the fourth consecutive year Long Beach State will
reign as the Big West Conference Women's Tennis Champions as the 49ers
defeated Cal Poly 4-0 in Sunday's championship match at the Indian Wells
Tennis Gardens. The #49-ranked 49ers improve to 17-8 overall, having won
seven matches in a row, and await this coming week's announcement of whom
they will play in the NCAA Tournament. Cal Poly, the #5 seed in the bracket,
ended its season at 9-12.
The 49ers have won five of the past six Big West titles and they stand
at 5-2 in Big West Championship matches. The 49ers have advanced to the
finals seven straight years, winning titles in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006
and 2007.
Long Beach began the day by winning two doubles matches and earning the
doubles point. Katy Williams and Stephanie Bengson won 8-2 at #1 doubles
over Steffi Wong and Brittany Blalock. The 49ers sealed the point at #3
doubles as Sandra Rocha and Rachael Porsz won 8-5 over Maria Malec and
Diana Filip.
In singles play, Long Beach won the first three matches in straight sets
to clinch. Porsz began singles play at #6 singles earning a 6-3, 6-2 win
over Melissa Bradford. Point number three came at #2 singles as Williams
won 7-5, 7-5 over Wong. The final point came at #1 singles as the #114-ranked
Grady defeated Blalock 6-1, 7-5.
The 49ers will find out their opponent in the 2007 NCAA Championships
on Tuesday, May 1. The women's bracket will be announced at approximately
11:45 am Pacific Time. Last season the 49ers were the #2 seed in the USC
bracket. Long Beach defeated New Mexico 4-1 in its first round match,
its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, before falling to #3-ranked USC
in the second round 4-0.
