Second Half Rally Not Enough
TEMPE, AZ-- 10th-seeded Long Beach State (8-18) will play UC Irvine for seventh place at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, barely. The 49ers rallied from a six-goal first half deficit to close to within one goal with 5:26 left, only to fall to sixth-seeded San Jose State (16-12) 15-12 in the consolation semifinals on a dust and rain filled Saturday matchup. The Beach trailed 10-3 at the half, only to close to within 13-12 with 5:26 left in the fourth period on one of three scores from Marina Canetti. LBSU began the rally in the third period, outscoring the Spartans 6-to-3, as one of four goals by Megan Winchell made it 13-9 with 20 seconds left thanks to a 6-on-5 opportunity. Juliet Moss then scored back-to-back goals with 5:21 and 1:49 left in the fourth period to put the game out of reach. Moss finished with six goals. Kendra Adama made 14 saves in goal for the Spartans. |
