Beach Moves on to Face UCLA on Friday
TEMPE, AZ-- Marina Canetti's four goals led 10th-seeded Long Beach State (8-16) to an upset of seventh-seeded California (10-11) 12-9 on Thursday to move the 49ers into a matchup with second-seeded UCLA on Friday at 12:40 p.m. at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships. The Beach bolted out to a 4-2 advantage after the first period and led 7-6 at halftime before the 49ers put a road block in front of the goal in the second half. LBSU allowed just three second half goals, as The Beach built a 10-6 lead after a 3-0 shutout in the third period. Canetti scored two goals in the third stanza, while also recording several key steals, after scoring two first half goals. Kim Hayes had seven saves in net for the 49ers. The win snaps a four-game slide for the 49ers and guarantees the team no worse than an eighth place finish and possibly a trip to the NCAA Championships with three more wins. The Beach will be the host institution of the eight-team NCAA Championships in Los Alamitos from May 11 to 13. For ticket information, call (562) 985-4949 |
