McElroy Shuts Down Aztecs 4-0
Junior Rights Ship For Career Outing

LONG BEACH, CA-- Three days after being pulled after not being able to get out of the second inning, Manny McElroy (3-1) bounced back with seven shutout innings of two-hit ball in leading No. 26-ranked Long Beach State (24-14) to a 4-0 win over visiting San Diego State (27-18). McElroy and Adam Wilk combined on a three-hitter for the team's second shutout of the season.

The Aztecs had scored 31 runs in their last game against Air Force.

Cline had his fifth-straight multi-hit game, going 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Dirtbags and McElroy, who was nearly un-hittable.

McElroy used just 60 pitches through five innings and finished his night with 95, pitching a career-high seven innings, while striking out five. Two errors in the seventh allowed two extra base runners to reach base after McElroy retired 18 of the first 20 batters. Troy Hanzawa broke up McElroy's perfect game in the fourth with a leadoff double, before McElroy retired the next seven in a row prior to Pat Colwell's bloop double in the sixth.

Cline (nine games) and Shane Peterson (14 games) both extended hit streaks to give LBSU a 1-0 lead in the third. Cline hit a two-out single to left field, before Peterson drove him in with his sixth double of the season. Robert Perry's hit streak ended at 15 games following an 0-for-4 night.

The Beach added to the lead in the fifth with a bases loaded walk to Steve Tinoco, after smart base running by TJ Mittelstaedt moved the freshman from first to third on an infield single to third. Mittelstaedt chased SDSU starter Charles Nolte (0-1) from the game with two outs and runners on the corners, before reliever Nate Solow walked the next two, to score Mittelsteadt.

Solow then gave up RBI singles to Kip Masuda and to Cline to make it 4-0 in the sixth.

The Beach head to Stockton for a three-game series at the University of the Pacific to resume Big West play starting on Friday at 2 p.m. The rotation for LBSU has yet to set. The series begins a five-weekend conference series push to end the regular season.
