McAtee Shuts Down Beach, as LBSU Mounts Rally in Ninth

LONG BEACH, CA-- UC Davis' Brad McAtee (2-3) pitched eight strong innings and shutdown No. 25-ranked Long Beach State (22-14), as the Aggies (13-22) evened the series, following a 6-4 win. McAtee gave up two runs on seven hits, striking out six, while walking none.

The Dirtbags had one more rally in them in the ninth, sending the go-ahead run to the plate following RBI singles by Matt Cline and Steve Tinoco, before releiver Eddie Gamboa finally settled down and got Shane Peterson to strikeout to end the game.

Robert Perry extended his hit streak to 14 games for the Dirtbags with a single in the second.

UC Davis chased Manny McElroy (2-1) from the game in the second as a solo home run by Kyle Mihaylo led off the inning, before a two-run home run by Matt Dempsey made it 4-0. UCD then added an unearned run in the fifth off a Matt Cline error at second to lead 5-0.

Andrew Liebel pitched the final seven and one-third innings, a career-best, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits for LBSU. The Dirtbags closed the gap in the sixth on back-to-back fielder's choices to make it 5-2, after LBSU loaded the bases with no outs.

The finale is Sunday at 1 p.m. The Beach will host San Diego State to close out the 13-game home stand on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
