Dirtbags Edged by Loyola Marymount 6-5 in 11 innings LONG BEACH, CA-- Sean Dovel's two-run, two out double in the top of the 11th following an error by second baseman AJ Pinocchio led visiting Loyola Marymount (18-22-1) to a 6-5 victory over host No. 25-ranked Long Beach State (21-13). Daniel Wolford (0-1), took the loss, coming on in the 11th and giving up a walk, before a Pinocchio error on a bunt attempt but two runners on. Following two outs, Dovel took an 0-1 pitch to center to clear the bases. A two-out RBI single by Jason Tweedy, one of three hits on the night, cut the lead in half in the 11th. LBSU loaded the bases in the final frame, before a throw across the diamond by shortstop Eric Farris beat Chris Nelson by a step to end the contest on a slow roller. Both teams squandered opportunities throughout the game, as LBSU left 18 runners on base and LMU left 14 runners on. LBSU was without half of its starting infield, as both shortstop Danny Espinosa (back) and Brandon Godfrey (wrist) missed the game. Mike Kenny (2-2), who came on with the bases load in the bottom of the ninth, took the win, pitching the final two and two-third innings. LBSU had a chance to win it in the ninth, loading the bases with one out, before Kenney came on and got the final two outs to send it to extra innings. A relay throw from right center kept it tied in the top of the 10th and ended the inning as TJ Bernardy was tagged out at home. Reliever Dustin Rasco gave up his first runs since March 13, a span of seven outings, as LMU tied the game in the sixth and then took the lead on a fielder's choice in the seventh, at 4-3. The Dirtbags then tied it in the bottom of the eighth scoring on a fielding error by shortstop Eric Farris with the bases loaded and two outs, as two feet separated himself and the final out in the inning. Farris then recovered to throw home and get Chris Nelson trying to score from second, at the plate. Robert Perry tied the single-game record for triples with two for LBSU, while extending his hit streak to 12 games following a 3-for-3 night. Perry's second triple in the fifth, gave LBSU a 3-2 lead as part of a three-run inning off of reliever Andy Beal. Starter Adam Wilk struck out a career-best three over the first three and one-third innings, as LMU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and added a run in the fourth to lead 2-0. Xavier Esquivel pitched the first three shutout innings for the Lions, scattering two hits and leaving two Dirtbags at third base. The Dirtbags remain at home this weekend when they host UC Davis starting on Friday to begin a three-game non-conference series. |
