Dirtbags Hold on For 6-5 Win

Beach Hold on For Arif to Defeat UC Davis 6-5 LONG BEACH, CA-- Omar Arif (2-5) picked up his first win since the second day of the season, as No. 25-ranked Long Beach State (22-13) held on to defeat UC Davis (12-22) 6-5 on Friday evening. Shane Peterson and Taylor Krick each drove in two on the night for The Beach, before closer Bryan Shaw finally shut the door for his seventh save followign a shaky ninth inning. Robert Perry extended his hit streak to 13 games following an RBI single in the fourth to make it 6-1. Matt Cline and Chris Nelson each had a triple and a single in the game. David Roberts pitched one and two-third shutout innings, after relieving Omar Arif in the seventh, giving up two hits in the inning to cut the LBSU lead to 6-4, before striking out the final batter in the inning and the next two to begin the eighth. He gave it over to Shaw in the ninth, who gave up a leadoff double to Ryan Royster, who scored following a passed ball and a groundout to make it 6-5. Shaw then gave up a single to Daniel Descalso, then moved him to third on an error and a wild pitch on ball four to put runners on the corners with two outs. Shaw then got Kevin James to strikeout to end the game. UC Davis took advantage of two errors by the Dirtbags in the seventh, scoring three runs (one earned) to close to within 6-4. A leadoff error by shortstop Danny Espinosa, in his first game back in seven tries, opened the inning, before a throwing error by right fielder Jason Corder allowed the fourth run to score. Omar Arif went a career-high six and one-third innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits. The Beach broke open the game early, 3-0, scoring once on a sacrifice fly by Peterson, followed by a two-run single by Taylor Krick. The Beach added two runs in the second to lead 5-1, off a bunt and ensuing fielding error by third baseman Daniel Descalso and then a groundout by Peterson. Trevor Fox went the first four and one-third innings for UCD, giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits. The series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. |
