Beach Picks Up Impressive Victory

LONG BEACH, CA-- The Long Beach State women's tennis team picked up an
impressive win on Wednesday afternoon at the 49er Campus Courts. The #58
ranked 49ers defeated #40 Pennsylvania by a 5-2 score. Long Beach improved
to 7-5 overall while Penn fell to 5-3. The 49ers are in the midst of a
six-match homestand and five of their opponents are nationally-ranked.
In doubles, the 49ers won at #1 and #3 doubles to claim the doubles point.
Long Beach clinched the point at the #1 spot as Stephanie Bengson and
Katy Williams rebounded from a 7-2 deficit to win 9-8 (7-4) over #19-ranked
Maria Anismova and Ekaterina Kosminskaya. At three doubles, Sandra Rocha
and Rachael Porsz won 8-5 over Michelle Mitchell and Lenka Snaidrova.
At two doubles, the Penn duo of Yulia Rivelis and Julia Koulbitskaya prevailed
8-3 over Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks.
In singles action the 49ers won at spots two through five, with three
of those wins coming in straight sets. Grady won at #2 singles by routing
Koulbitskaya 6-0, 6-1. Bengson won at #3 singles 6-4, 6-4 over Rivelis
and Rocha won at five singles 7-5, 6-1 over Mitchell. Weeks had to go
three sets for her win at #4 singles, but she came out on top 6-3, 4-6,
6-4 over Anismova.
The 49ers will next be in action on Tuesday, March 13 when they host #15-ranked
Virginia Commonwealth at 2 pm at the 49er Campus Courts.
