Dirtbags Fall in 13

Wichita State Takes Series in the 13th WICHITA, KS-- Andy Dirks double off the leftfield gave No. 12-ranked Wichita State a 3-2 victory in the 13th inning and the series over visiting No. 17-ranked Long Beach State (12-7). Bryan Shaw (2-1), who gave up the lead in the ninth, took the loss after giving up two straight singles with one out, prior to the hit by Dirks. Shaw went a carer-high 4.2 innings in the contest, tiring in his fifth inning of work. It was the third one-run game of the series. Noah Booth (1-0) went the final 3.2 shutout innings for the win It was the longest game for LBSU since May, 2002, when they went 16 innings with CS Fullerton. Wichita State tied it at 2-2 in the ninth off of closer Bryan Shaw with two outs, as a bloop single by pinch hitter Tyler Hill scored pinch runner Cody Lassley from third. Tyler Weber had popped up a bloop double in between three LBSU players to lead off the ninth, before two groundouts kept it at 2-1. Steve Tinoco led off the fifth with a solo homerun, as Matt Cline added an RBI single as part of a four-hit inning for The Beach to take an early 2-0 lead. WSU starter Rob Mustgrave had retired eight in a row into the fourth innning and had used just 40 pitches over the first four innings. Mustgrave pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits, but left trailing 2-1. He and pitcher Kyle Touchatt retired eight in row into the 10th. After the bullpen retired six in a row, Andre Lamontagne gave up a solo homerun to Derek Schermerhorn to start the sixth to cut the lead to 2-1. Shane Peterson in his first weekend start of his career and on a pitch count, went a per-determined 3.1 shutout innings for Long Beach State, striking out a career-best four and giving up just two hits. Lamontagne went the next 2.2 innings, giving up just that one homer, before Adam Wilk pitched the next 1.2 innings, leaving with a runner on base, but after a two-out walk, Shaw got a groundout to end the eighth. The Dirtbags will return home next week when they host CS Fullerton in a three-game, non-conference schedule starting on Friday. |
