Roberts Earns Win as Beach Win Third in a Row

WESTWOOD, CA-- No. 17-ranked Long Beach State (11-5) won its third in a row thanks a four-run eighth inning, defeating host UCLA (8-10) 4-2 on Tuesday evening. David Roberts (1-0) pitched one and two-third shutout innings of relief for his first Division-I win, giving it over to the bullpen with a 4-0 lead in the ninth.

UCLA scored two runs in the ninth off of Jason Markovitz and Dustin Rasco, who earned his first Divison-I save.

The Dirtbags broke open the game with four runs in the eighth to lead 4-0 off of four UCLA pitchers. Jason Tweedy led off the inning with a double off of Kevin Brophy before scoring on a two-out RBI single from reigning Big West Player of the Week, Brandon Godfrey. A wild pitch by Matthew Drummond made it 2-0, before a two-run home run by Jason Corder made it 4-0. Corder ended the night 2-for-4.

LBSU starter Shane Peterson scattered three hits over the first three, pre-determined shutout innings. Andre Lamontagne came on in the fourth and retired eight in a row before giving up a two-out single in the sixth. He pitched three and one-third scoreless innings, striking out three.

Garrett Claypool pitched a shutout into the sixth for UCLA, retiring nine in a row and five in a row over five and one third innings.

The Dirtbags travel to No. 12-ranked Wichita State this weekend for a three-game series.
